I’m type polite but now I’m looking at her skeptically, cos baby girl got all the right weaponry.

I was on the bus coming home from my internship when I saw a little girl and her grandpa get on and take a seat in front of me. I swear to you, she was just like me when I was her age. Everything from the way she looked to the half walk/half jump/dance way I used to walk. She spoke like I did, she looked like I did, but the only thing that was different is that her grandpa didn’t look anything like you did. But Grandpa, the way he treated her was just the way you treated me—with love. Tears welled up in my eyes as she told her grandpa about what she did at school, and how she laughed at the silly things he said, and when he began interrogating her about where she heard the word stupid. I wanted to tell her to never let go of her grandpa but my tears wouldn’t let me speak. I miss you more than words can say, Grandpa. I really do. I know you’re watching over me, and you probably suck your teeth really loud like any other Trinidadian when you see me doing something that I probably shouldn’t be. Things have changed so much since you’ve been gone; I’m in art school, I have an internship, and I’m becoming the woman that I want to be. I just wish you were here with me, to laugh with me, to share your corny jokes, to give me the best advice, and to tell grandma to relax. It seems that since you’ve been gone, everyone forgot about you. I try not to, I really do. I love you.
